Position Purpose
The Bus Driver Coordinator works under limited supervision to ensure bus driver training for Agency drivers and drivers in training. The Bus Driver Coordinator assists the Transportation Manager or Designee with ongoing training of drivers and in assessing driver performance. Operates school bus in accordance with state laws and district policies.
Essential Job Responsibilities: Performance Indicators
Driving & Safety (75%)
- Transport children to and from Head Start centers efficiently and safely.
- Ensure that all passengers wear seat belts or are placed in appropriate (age or weight) car seats and belted in.
- Ensure that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of any child on the bus.
- Perform daily sign on & sign off sheets, accounting by name all children getting on and off the bus.
- Ensure that each child is delivered to the care of a responsible adult upon leaving bus (on the authorized list).
- Ensure that no child is ever left unattended while on the bus, following all procedures put in place to prevent a child being left behind.
- Visually observe the health of each child on the bus.
- Coordinate the paperwork flow between homes and Head Start sites.
- Continuous collaboration with site staff, families and transportation manager to design efficient bus routes, mail/message deliveries and staffing.
- Attends work regularly and is punctual.
Assist the Transportation Manager (10%)
- Train prospective drivers as assigned by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
- Participate in accident investigation as directed by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
- Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Conduct retraining of employees as directed by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
- Assist with department training as directed by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
- Maintains confidentiality of privileged information.
- Documents all training activities.
- Attends all driver tests with trainee.
- Evaluates and reports to Transportation Manager or Designee the progress of each trainee. Makes a recommendation to the Transportation Manager or Designee concerning employment of trainee.
Maintenance (10%)
- Conducts fleet inspections as assigned by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
- Maintains all records required in a neat and accurate manner.
Minor Job Responsibilities (5%)
- Pick up supplies as needed.
- Other duties as requested.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of six years of experience as a school bus driver.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as required by the Agency and as required for school bus drivers.
- Possess or show the ability to obtain an Oregon State Certified Driver Trainer Certificate.
- Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is not tardy. Training duties may require work hours outside a “typical” shift.
- Working knowledge of the behaviors and developmental stages of pre-school children, typically gained by working one year or more in a school or preschool setting.
- Knowledge of safety practices as they relate to pre-school children.
- Good written and oral communications skills and basic math skills.
- Ability to maintain schedules while meeting individual needs of children and families.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License and driving record free of any moving violations within the last three years.
- School Bus Driver’s License desirable at time of hire, required for continued employment.
- Pediatric CPR/First Aid certified at time of hire or achieve certification within 30 day from date of hire.
- Employment conditional upon results of the following:
- Enrollment in Child Care Division- Central Background Registry
- DMV check
- Drug Screen
- Bus Driver Physical Examination and Physical Capacity Examination
Physical/Mental Abilities and Processes
- Physical capability, strength and coordination adequate to drive a 20 and up passenger busses.
- Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
- Intermediate level decisions needed to adhere to safety and scheduling considerations.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50lbs, typically placing children into seats and ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation out of the bus to a safe area.
- Frequent bending at neck, frequent bending at waist and knees and occasional squatting.
- Occasional climbing to enter and exit bus.
- Daily sitting, about 85% of driving time.
