In the primary grades, students are learning about school, they are learning fundamental mathematics content, and they are developing written language skills. A particular challenge of work in these early grades is helping students build early mathematics knowledge when they are still learning about school and developing skills with written language and print. Language is an essential part of teaching and learning mathematics; supporting students to develop language skills alongside mathematics is a powerful tool for building student confidence and competence.

In this first edWebinar of a two-part series, Dr. Sara Delano Moore will share resources and strategies for developing the language and concepts of addition and subtraction with children’s literature. We will develop conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction with trade books and big books that use high-quality language features as well as strong mathematics. Learn strategies to help students move from everyday language to mathematical language while understanding the full range of work for addition and subtraction. Join Sara to explore strategies and resources for developing conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction through language and literature.

Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D. serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA Hand2Mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series.
