From Florida to Oregon, parent to employee, Nikki Bravo joined us as an Aide to now a Home Visitor. She is a testament that you can do anything you say you can.

Are you a parent? Were you or are you a HS/EHS parent?
I was indeed a Head Start Parent. My daughter Penelope is now in the 4th grade, but at 3 years old, she started with Head Start in Miami, FL. When we moved to Eugene, she went to the U of O Head Start with Teacher Stormy. Shortly after, she had Teacher Ashlee. Head Start has been a blessing for my family. Once my daughter was enrolled, I asked if Head Start had job openings. A few months later, I was hired! Started as an aide, moved to teaching, and now I’m loving my role as a home visitor for Early Head Start. The agency has supported and inspired my decision to further my education and professional development. For that, I am thankful.
Are you from Oregon?
My family and I moved here from Miami, FL, 5 years ago. I’m Cuban American, and my husband is from Nicaragua. We needed a new environment that was healthier for our little family. We picked Eugene, Oregon, and haven’t looked back since. My husband earned his journalism degree from the U of O after we moved. Although our family and friends are mostly in Miami, we know we made the best decision for us. We packed up a van with our prized possessions, two dachshunds, and a tortoise and headed to the West Coast. From beaches to mountains. From all year-round summer to actual seasons. From flip flops to boots! Oregon holds a special place in our hearts, and we’ve made wonderful friends and connections along the way.
What surprised you most about HS?
The amount of support and genuine care to quality early childhood settings and resources. The dedication and love from staff go beyond the classroom and into the homes of the people we serve. I was also taken aback by the overall abundance of family services we offer.
What would you tell parents about HS/EHS you think they really need to know?
That the most important teacher in their children’s lives, will always be them. That not only are we there for their children but for them as well. EHS and HS will build a path for their child that will last a lifetime.
