What a well thought out plan to inform, engage, learn, test and do!
Congratulations to UO for a successful cooking project

We created a cooking project lesson and planned it into our daily schedule Nov. 9th, 2023.

I informed the parents ahead of time in our November letter, and referenced the learning we had been following from the USDA https://www.myplate.gov/

We first started this plan early by decorated our dramatic play area as a pizza parlor and practiced for four weeks prior to the cooking project. We also took a field trip to see our cook “Jamie,” preparing meals in the kitchen here at the U of O. We read lots of books about food and our class favorite “Pete’s perfect pizza party by James Dean.”  We had discussions about pizza: including toppings and what we would need ahead of time.

The children also practiced in the weeks leading up to it how to roll dough with play dough during play times. The teaching team created a cooking project lesson plan with a pizza recipe and submitted it to the Food Service Manager for approval.

Then the day came where we used all we had learned about health, counting, sharing / taking turns and our expanded vocabulary around ingredients. Children were given dough to roll out with rolling pins, and a variety of toppings to choose from.

The pictures just say it all, and everyone had the best time playing “cooks for the day,” while creating their own pizza.

HS Staff are the best! 🙂
A Special thanks to all who helped make this cooking project such a success.

Thanks to our dietitian Caroline Weber for approving and gathering all the materials we needed. Additional thanks to anyone in the main kitchen who got it delivered to us in time.

Thank you, Jamie Lowe, for prepping the food and cooking our pizzas here at the U of O. Thank you U of O teaching team ( Toni Jenkins, Jennifer Conklin, and Isabel Lopez-Ramirez ) for helping all the children during prep and lunch that day,… You’re all so amazing!
