More Than Just a Buzzword: Embedding “Equity-Mindedness” for Concrete Change

Research has demonstrated that school policy, teacher pedagogies, and educational leadership are directly impacted by broader societal issues. Over a year since its emergence, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to highlight ongoing inequities through its disproportionate impact on communities of color. This has coincided with the rise in frequency of racial violence, most recently targeting Black and Asian communities within the United States.

Put plainly, our communities are enduring multiple crises. It is therefore critical that educational leaders at every level are equipped to address the ways these crises manifest (and have manifested) within K-12 educational settings, in order to define and create a “new normal” rooted in equity-mindedness. This moment calls all educators to reconstruct learning to meet children where they are, and ultimately guide them towards a brighter, equitable future.

In this edLeader Panel, attendees will:

  • Learn what equity-mindedness means as a way of thinking, working, and living
  • Concretize recurring conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion that impact our youth
  • Reflect on “norms” within our schools that are inequitable by design
  • Devise ways to create more equitable norms and strategies moving forward

This edLeader Panel will be of interest to teachers, librarians, and school and district leaders of the kindergarten through middle school levels. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
